The truth of the matter is that I have been asked to go to functions just like this in the past where I don’t know the hosts, but at my girl friend’s insistence, of course I did eventually go.
Why didn’t I want to go?
Through my own thinking I had created a sense of fear about attending the party…which was not at all based in reality.
I had imagined myself standing awkwardly in the corner, earnestly trying to discover something to talk about – even though I tried really hard, I consistently struggled to connect with people. I never was able to find common ground, the conversations always seemed so awkward, I always seemed to have an unenjoyable time.
This was how I had pictured myself at this party.
Haven’t we all been to parties like this before?
These are the kinds of gatherings you go to where you think to yourself that you would rather be getting a tooth removed at the dentist office than suffering through this utter social torture….
But what if I had tried to simply picture and expect a different and better outcome?
Instead of sitting there, alone and miserable…imagine if I had been encircled by incredible, awe inspiring people very interested in me, who I was, where I was from and what I did, taking part in great conversation, while enjoyable music played in the background, completely relaxed and calm, enjoying the life experience?
Now say I had pictured in my mind the above scenario, do you think I may have had an easier time attending the party, and possibly even wanted to attend the gathering?
